Russian is known for its long, intimidating words – full of consonants, unexpected stresses, and sounds your mouth isn’t used to. No wonder many language learners stumble over Russian tongue twisters. In this article, a selection of long Russian words, with videos demonstrating the correct pronunciation.

Hard to pronounce Russian words

Some of these words are difficult even for native speakers – трудновыговариваемый, literally “hard to pronounce.” Many learners struggle with clusters of consonants in Russian, which can make even short words challenging. A good example is взгляд (vzglad, “glance” or “view”), which begins with four consonants. Find more difficult Russian words in the videos below.

Long Russian words

Russian words are on average slightly longer than English ones, but the difference is smaller than you might think. In English, the average word length is around 4.7 letters, while in Russian it is 7.2 letters.

Still, many learners experience Russian as a language of many and very long words. This is mainly due to its structure: …words often take multiple prefixes and suffixes and frequently contain dense clusters of consonants. As a result, they look longer and are harder to pronounce.

Examples: Человеконенавистничество and Достопримечательность

Hélène (Элен) also found Russian words to be on the long side. Or even сумасшедшие – crazy. Check out Я только что осознала, что много ваших русских слов сумасшедшие (2020, 10 mins). The words in question appear from 5:33, including человеконенавистничество (misanthropy, hatred of humanity). As a bonus, a bit of French, with anticonstitutionnellement (25 letters).

The word достопримечательность (tourist attraction) is often cited as an example, though it’s three letters shorter (21) than человеконенавистничество.

Превысокомногорассмотрительствующий: longest Russian word?

If you happen to know the Russian words for antidisestablishmentarianism or pseudopseudohypoparathyroidism, that would be supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. Longest words also lists Russian counterparts: monsters like превысокомногорассмотрительствующий (35 letters), тысячево­сьмисот­восьми­десяти­девяти­микро­метровый (46), and тетра­гидро­пиранил­цикло­пентил­тетра­гидро­пиридо­пириди­новая (55).

Pronunciation and reading of long words in Russian

Long words tied to pronunciation in the following video (Boost Your Russian, 2019, 20 mins). Starting with соответственно, неудовлетворительно, одиннадцатиклассница, the good old tourist attraction word, and the list grows longer, ending with превысокомногорассмотрительствующий.

Completely wrong

Denis Fedorov (2017, 16 mins) discusses reading long words, with this great long sentence:

‘First, one tries to read it in full, then mumbles something, then stutters for several times, and then pronounces the word so completely wrong that you think there is no more wrong way to pronounce the word.’

It only gets better from there.

Now don’t get the idea that Russian is always hard or long. The Russian language also holds the world record for shortest sentence, with just 3 letters.
